I’ve had nightmares in the past of being near ground zero of a nuclear explosion. Well, this is what cell phone video of that would look like (minus some light).

2700 tons of ammonium nitrate is roughly equivalent to 1.1 kilotons of TNT, or about 1/15th the yield of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The cameraman here
died (probably instantly from overpressure)
. The footage somehow survived.

Well shit...

How long was the fire burning? Doesn’t look like they even tried to evacuate the area.

I get the impression it was all very quick. None of the videos run for more than a minute before the big explosion, in fact I’d say I haven’t seen one yet that runs for more than 10-15 seconds.

Cameras with solid-state storage create many terrifying videos like this. T hough they usually stay in the gory part of a report and are never released to the public.

Most fires don’t detonate high-order tactical nuclear sized explosions, this camera holder probably figured he was at a safe distance. At least he only had about 1 second to regret his choice.

You can actually see the shockwave tear apart that building. Amazing footage, the person filming thought they were just taking a quick video of some smoke and fire. Very unfortunate to say the least.

If you didn’t know the danger of the fire, you might think you were at a safe distance. Sure seemed like it. Damn.

I was thinking the same thing. Had I been the one holding the camera, I totally would have thought that I was far enough away.

RIP Cameraman.
Probably died from blunt force trau ma from the debris of the white building in the foreground.

Mercifully, the shockwave probably killed him more or less instantly first. Horrible. Simply horrible.

The few cars that drove in front of him too...

It looks like
it was from a movie, but it’s
real.

My boat is on the hard a mile from the East Coast nuclear sub base. It is a primary target in any scenario . We will be atoms so fast we will never feel it so we don’t worry about it. Life is short ; never live with fear! Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the ability to overcome it. Or yer dead anyway; why bother with worry?

Most movie explosions have much more fireball and much less shockwave. This is as real as it gets.

“ Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, said that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive material used in fertilizers and bombs, had been stored for six years at a port warehouse without safety measures” (CNN)
Well, there’s your problem.
